MELVILLE HOCKEY UMPIRING

Introduction

This year, a new model for Club umpiring has been introduced by Hockey WA. In a nutshell, the model is defined as:

For all fixtures outside of those that receive Hockey WA panel umpires, each of the two participating clubs are to provide their own umpire.

Who does this apply to?

This model applies across all juniors and seniors of both genders; i.e. unless you receive Hockey WA panel umpires the participating clubs provide their own umpires.

How will it work ?

The Club will continue to allocate umpires each week as best it can depending on fixturing and this will result in a number of different scenarios:

  1. Team mangers can approach someone who no longer plays hockey to carry out their team’s umpiring duties, regardless of whether they are from our club or not.
  2. Teams with a bye will be allocated umpiring duties, for Melville teams.
  3. Where 2 teams are playing at the same venue at different times, players will be asked to umpire ‘back-to-back’.
  4. Where teams play away from home and point 3 doesn’t apply, teams will be expected to have at least 12 players and one of them will umpire, rotating throughout the game. We hope this situation will not arise often.

What does it mean for me ?

  • You will be required to umpire on more than one occasion this year and you will be umpiring a Melville team.
  • If you know someone who might like to be your ‘team umpire’ approach them now and let me know.
  • If you think you need some help to umpire, let me or your team manager know and we’ll arrange some umpiring training sessions.

Club Umpiring Panel

With the changes to the Club umpiring model for 2008, we would like to establish and develop a Club Umpire Panel. These people would all be accredited at either Community or Beginner level and make themselves available to umpire regularly or occasionally. Typically, teams will recompense umpires but that is for negotiation between the team and the umpire.

Would you like to be a member of the MCHC Umpiring Panel ?
  • You will get the chance to umpire games that suit your skill level and availability. Juniors, seniors, men, women, vets, all grades required.
  • Education and coaching will be available
  • You may get some handy pocket money too

If you’d like to go on the list, simply email me with you personal details, contact information and the grades you would like to umpire. Also indicate your previous experience and if you would like some coaching. That info will then be circulated around the Club.

I look forward to hearing from you

MCHC Umpiring Manager

Umpire abuse takes many forms, verbal, physical or as subtle as bad body language. Whatever form it takes, it is totally unacceptable in today’s game. You are all bound by the Club’s code of player conduct, Hockey WA rules, International rules and others.

The message is clear, UMPIRE ABUSE IS UNACCEPTABLE.

This year, every game you play will be umpired by someone from your club, or even your team, someone who has given their time so you can have a game of hockey. Think about that next time you want to give the umpire any words of advice.

Team captains, I ask you to be vigilant and jump on any of your team who transgresses, either during or after the game. I suggest those people should be the next to fulfill your team’s umpiring duties.

Melville has been a forerunner in developing top class umpires, lets make sure we are a leader in player behavior as well.
