Umpiring
2010
Umpiring at Melville
- Team's umpiring Allocations 01-08-2010 to 31-08-2010
- Most grades have an odd number of teams so each week one team has an umpiring bye.
That team will be required to (typically) provide 8 umpires for 4 games as shown in the table below.
Some grades will be 'self umpire' and others will have games allocated by HWA on a weekly basis.
It is absolutely essential that all our umpiring allocations are filled. Failure to do so means significant fines and these will be levied back to the teams who didn't show for their allocated duty.
Allocations for each team will be posted on our web site and also emailed to the team/grade co ordinators but it is your responsibility to check. If you have a bye, you will probably be umpiring. - 2010 Umpiring model explanation

Rule Clarifications 2010
In addition to the 2 experimental rules for the 2010 season, there are a couple of clarifications:
- On an attacking free hit within the 23m zone, it is OK to flick the ball across the circle before the ball has travelled 5m provided:
- a. It is not dangerous or likely to lead to danger and
- b. The ball cannot land inside the circle, it must land outside.
- So what that means is a ball travelling across the circle in the air is not deemed to have entered the circle.
- Again on an attacking free hit within the 23m zone, the ball may be moved from side to side a number of times and if the umpire deems that it has travelled a total of 5m, it can then be played into the circle.
In practice, it is unlikely anyone will have time to do this without being closed down. - Finally a reminder that all teams must have a goalkeeper with a minimum of protective headgear. The goalkeeper (or player wearing headgear) is not allowed outside of the defensive 23m zone
No goalkeeper, no game.
